 Hot stamping or foil stamping is done with pre-dried ink or foils transferred to another surface at high temperatures. In the 19th century, hot tamping was a popular technique of applying gold tooling or embossing in book printing on leather and paper. Ernst Oeser recorded the first patent for hot stomping in 1892.

Foils are the multi-layered coatings that are transferred to the surface of the product. Foil constitutes three functional layers:

  • A transparent film is not transferred to the product but forms the carrier upon which the pigment is laid.
  • The primary layer of pigmented sediments that form the actual colour that will be seen. Metallica foils employ a vacuum metalising process that deposits a microns-thin layer of pigmented aluminium onto the carrier noted above.
  • The third layer is a release coating, i.e., a heat-activated glue that helps to join the pigmented sediments onto the product and is hot stamped.
