 Hot stamping or foil stamping is done with pre-dried ink or foils transferred to another surface at high temperatures. Hot stamping is one of the most important modes of decoration on plastic products since the latter half of the 1970s. In the 19th century, hot tamping was a popular technique of applying gold tooling or embossing in book printing on leather and paper. Ernst Oeser recorded the first patent for hot stomping in 1892.

 

Since the 1950s, hot stamping has become a popular means of marking plastic used for automobile parts (interior and exterior materials), electric components (TV frames, audio components, refrigerators etc.), and cosmetic containers (lipstick, cream, mascara, shampoo bottle etc.). Foils are the multi-layered coatings that are transferred to the surface of the product. Foil constitutes three functional layers:

  • A transparent film is not transferred to the product but forms the carrier upon which the pigment is laid.
  • The primary layer of pigmented sediments that form the actual colour that will be seen. Metallica foils employ a vacuum metalising process that deposits a microns-thin layer of pigmented aluminium onto the carrier noted above.
  • The third layer is a release coating, i.e., a heat-activated glue that helps to join the pigmented sediments onto the product and is hot stamped.
