An essential guide to Hot Stamping Foil

Hot stamping or foil stamping is done with pre-dried ink or foils transferred to another surface at high temperatures. Hot stamping is one of the most important modes of decoration on plastic products since the latter half of the 1970s. In the 19th century, hot tamping was a popular technique of applying gold tooling or embossing in book printing on leather and paper. Ernst Oeser recorded the first patent for hot stomping in 1892.

Since the 1950s, hot stamping has become a popular means of marking plastic used for automobile parts (interior and exterior materials), electric components (TV frames, audio components, refrigerators etc.), and cosmetic containers (lipstick, cream, mascara, shampoo bottle etc.). It has also been used as a technique for security printing since 1998. Holostik hot stamping foil secures the product and enhances its aesthetics for high visibility.

Foils are the multi-layered coatings that are transferred to the surface of the product. Foil constitutes three functional layers:

  • A transparent film is not transferred to the product but forms the carrier upon which the pigment is laid.
  • The primary layer of pigmented sediments that form the actual colour that will be seen. Metallica foils employ a vacuum metalising process that deposits a microns-thin layer of pigmented aluminium onto the carrier noted above.
  • The third layer is a release coating, i.e., a heat-activated glue that helps to join the pigmented sediments onto the product and is hot stamped.

Most popular types of registered/unregistered  foil manufactured by Holostik are:

  • Non-metallic foils consist of three basic layers- an adherence base, a colour layer, and a release layer.
  • Metallic foil construction has a metal-like sheen and is available in a rainbow of shades. Silver and gold are still the most popular. It is done by replacing the colour layer with a layer of chrome or vacuum-metallized aluminium.
  • Pigment foil has no metallic sheen. These foils are popular for plastic or paper and might be matte or glossy.
  • Holostik holographic foil paper includes a 3- D image to provide a distinguished appearance in specific areas of a digitally printed application. Printing is usual in leather or paper. Applied with a specialised foil feed system it improves both security and cosmetic appeal.
  • Effects foil gives the illusion of special effects. There’s a wide variety other than single-colour tones:
    • Stripes
    • Sparkles
    • Light diffractions
    • Holographic patterns
    • Stone and wood grains
  • Scratch-off is not permanent. The client/consumer will scratch off-patch strips to reveal the information inside.
  • A signature panel, like the signature panel at the back of your Visa Card.
